Andrew George – New Paintings

10 September until 6 November 2011

Andrew George is a true naturalist. His subtle, pared down paintings impart the atmosphere of being in the wild remote places he paints, whether they are the Dorset cliffs, Scottish mountains, Cornish beaches or the Mendip valleys around Bath near where he lives.

He works in egg tempera with delicacy and assurance, giving astonishing detail of trees and rocks in pictures of spare and fascinating composition. Given that this is a hard medium to control, Andrew George is particularly masterful with it. He chooses to paint winter landscapes as he finds the bare trees of winter are far more interesting than the dense foliage of summer.
Andrew is a Scottish artist who trained at Edinburgh College of Art. He moved to Somerset in the 1980s where he has exhibited regularly. His style is influenced by that of the high Realists, painters who rendered every detail in a landscape. However his strong sense of composition takes reality and makes it his own.
